The high scoring midfielder first made his impact for the Czech Republic during the qualifying stages of the 1996 European Championships scoring a total of 6 goals, he then scored the opening goal for the Czechs in the final against Germany. He has been a major key to the Czech's success on the world soccer stage through his pin-point passing, shooting and his unpredictability on the field which causes opposing teams to ponder about if he's going to pass or shoot. During the start of his first season at Liverpool FC, he became an instant hit, scoring 2 goals in his league debut and netting 3 others in his next two games. But things began to turn sour due to the coach playing favorites with the players thus putting Berger on the bench to make way for players whom had no business to be in the first team. This year Berger had a great start to the season , scoring a hatrick against Chelsea and then scoring again in the next game, but once again the coach assigned him to the bench leaving him no choice, but not to play for the club anymore as a show of protest and flying back to the Czech Republic awaiting a transfer to his teammate, Karel Poborsky's club Benfica Lisbon, in Portugal.
